Article by Brien Tompkins

Smoking is a big, worldwide problem with the number of smokers rapidly growing each year. This is exacerbated by the fact that passive smokers are also affected when they inhale smoke coming from cigarettes. This is one of the reasons why UK legislation now requires the display of No Smoking signs in public places to have safe and cleaner air for everyone. The new law requires no smoking signs to be displayed in all smoke free premises and vehicles since such signs help make it clear which places are smoke free and to show on your part that you’re taking the necessary steps to meet the requirements of the law. No smoking signs must be displayed in a prominent position at every entrance on smoke free premises and should meet the following requirements:

# It should be in a minimum size of A5 in area or approximately 210mm x 148mm

# It should carry these words in readable characters: “No smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises.”

# Display the international no smoking symbol that consist solely of a graphic representation of a single burning cigarette enclosed in a circle of at least 70mm in diameter with a red bar across it.

# Alternatively, a smaller no smoking sign that consist of the international no smoking symbol at least 70mm in diameter may be displayed at entrances that are only used by your staff or on premises located within a larger smoke free premises like indoor shopping centres.

For business establishments, employers, and those in-charge of smoke free premises and vehicles, you need to ensure that:

# If applicable, remove all your existing indoor smoking rooms

# Install No Smoking signs in smoke free premises and vehicles

# Make sure that no one smokes in smoke free premises and vehicles

# Implement realistic measures to ensure that staff, members/customers as well as visitors are aware that the premises of your building including vehicles are legally required to be smoke free

Aside from the above-mentioned measures, you may also want to apply these supportive measures:

# Provide training for all your staff in order to assist them in understanding the new law and the responsibilities that entails with it.

# Offer support on your staff and customers to help them quit smoking

# Develop a smoke free policy in coordination with your staff.
